So you want to be a copywriter.
Start thinking now about how you could do it better. Tear out the ads you don’t like in newspapers. Use their strategy as a brief and come up with a better idea. Look at a badly written letter and think about how you could make it work harder. You need to find a USP - the unique selling proposition. The one thing that stands out and makes that product or business more advantageous than any other. When there isn’t one, you need to build in a perception of a USP. That’s called added value.
Facts, statistics, case studies are good. Real, believable news that changes people’s minds.
You’re only ever as good as your last idea.
Advertising, copywriting and marketing are incredible businesses to be in. If you get it right you can make money and learn about a world of different businesses. You can work in advertising agencies, marketing companies, design studios or individual enterprises. You can create amazing ideas... Start by building a portfolio.
You need to have examples to show people what you can do. Good ideas, brilliantly constructed and well thought through. Start with print ads. Try a sales letter. Think about how a single-minded approach could work across different media ie.. a business card, a website, a TV commercial,a trade ad.
